Delaware volleyball team splits weekend matches

UD’s Kelly Gibson had 21 kills and 14 digs in a 3-2 loss at Georgia State.

9:21 a.m., Nov. 6, 2006--The University of Delaware volleyball team split a pair of Colonial Athletic Association weekend matches. The Fightin' Blue Hens fell 3-2 at Georgia State University on Friday but rebounded to defeat the University of North Carolina Wilmington 3-0 on Sunday.

UD is 18-8 overall and 9-7 in the CAA, where the team holds on to fifth place. The Hens will return home to face the College of William & Mary at 7 p.m., Friday, and Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m., Saturday, with both matches at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building. William & Mary is 10-14 overall and 6-10 in the conference and Virginia Commonwealth is 14-12 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

In the loss at Georgia State, the Hens jumped out to a 2-1 lead before the Panthers came back for the win. UD's Kelly Gibson, the reigning CAA player of the week, had 21 kills and 14 digs. Colleen Walsh had 17 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde had 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .400. Setter Megan Welch had 61 assists and freshman Kelly Matthias had eight kills and seven blocks.

In the victory over host UNC Wilmington, the Hens won 30-18, 30-20 and 30-17. Senior Heather Ranck had 16 digs and Melch had 46 assists. Matthias and LaLonde combined for 15 kills and four blocks.
