UD volleyball program announces five recruits

1:50 p.m., Nov. 9, 2006--Five standout high school volleyball players have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the University of Delaware beginning with the 2007 season, Fightin' Blue Hens Head Coach Bonnie Kenny has announced.

The UD volleyball signing class features setter Jessica Chason of Concord, N.C.; hitter Katie Dennehy of Charlotte, N.C.; hitter Paige Erickson of Tulsa, Okla.; hitter Heather Lively of Northfield, Mass.; and hitter Jasmine Powell of Norman, Okla.

“I am really excited about our 2007 class,” Kenny said. “They bring a tremendous amount of athleticism, energy, enthusiasm, hard-working determination and depth. We can't wait for them to get here and we welcome them to our UD volleyball family.”

Chason, a 5-foot, 9-inch setter, has played at Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, where she was named to the MECA 6 all-conference team all four years and was recently selected the 2006 conference player of the year. A four-year starter and team captain, Chason earned Carolina all-region honors in each of the last three seasons. She is the student body president, and is a member of the BETA Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and the National Honor Society. Chason also is a member of the Piedmont Volleyball Club. “Jess is a hard-working, dynamic athlete who will give us depth in the setting position,” Kenny said. “She has very good leadership skills and is a good teammate.”

Dennehy, a 5-11 outside and right hitter from Providence High School in Charlotte, was named the 2006 Southwestern 4A Conference most valuable player. A 2005 Junior Olympic all-region team selection and a 2005 Colorado Crossroads national qualifier champion, Dennehy led Providence to the 2003, 2004 and 2005 state championships. She is a member of the Key Club, student government, the National Honor Society and the Piedmont Volleyball Club. “Katie is an excellent athlete who gets off the floor fast,” Kenny said. “She is a high-energy player that loves to play.”

Erickson, a 6-0 middle and right side hitter from Jenks High School, was named the Frontier Valley Conference player of the year while leading Jenks to the 2006 state championship. An all-state selection, Erickson was a four-year starter and served as team captain her last two seasons. Erickson, who was named to the academic all-conference team in each of her four years, is a member of the Oklahoma Peak Performance Volleyball Club, the National Honor Society and Drug Free Youth. “Paige is an intense competitor with an excellent work ethic,” Kenny said. “She does anything and everything asked of her.”

Lively, a 6-1 outside hitter from Pioneer Valley High School, was a five-year varsity starter who was twice named the team's most valuable player. She was a four-time first team all-star and earned first team all-scholastic for western Massachusetts. A member of the West team that won the 2006 gold medal at the Bay State Games, Lively is a member of the Hardrock Volleyball Club. Lively, a high honor roll student, is also a member of the National Honor Society, student council, and Students Against Destructive Decisions. “Heather has a high ceiling for development,” Kenny said. “She is a diamond in the rough.”

Powell, a 5-9 outside hitter from Norman North High School, was named to the all-state team and was a Daily Oklahoman all-city selection as a junior and senior. Powell was selected Norman North's team most valuable player and was named the squad's offensive player of the year in each of the last two seasons. A member of the Oklahoma Peak Performance Volleyball Club, Powell is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, is secretary of the African American Association, is a member of the Kiwanis Club and Latin Club, and is a member of the crew that produces the Norman North High “Timber Wolf Tracks” television show. “Jasmine is a remarkable athlete,” Kenny said. “She has the tools to be a solid all-around player.”
