Alums invited to tour Winterthur labs Nov. 19

11:45 a.m., Nov. 10, 2006--The University of Delaware's New Castle County Alumni Club will sponsor a special event, highlighting the Department of Art Conservation, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19, at Winterthur Museum and Country Estate.

Brunch will be offered at 11 a.m. and private tours of the conservation laboratories, led by students and by Debra Hess Norris, '77AS, 80M, will be held at noon and 1 p.m. Norris, UD's Henry Francis du Pont Chair in Fine Arts, also serves as chairperson of the Department of Art Conservation and as the interim associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

A world-renowned authority on photographic preservation, Norris has consulted on projects ranging from the Dead Sea Scrolls to collections of artworks by Thomas Eakins and Andy Warhol. She teaches courses in the preservation of cultural property and the examination, analysis, treatment and preventive care of historic and contemporary photographic materials. She teaches and advises both undergraduate and graduate students.

Norris graduated from UD in 1977 with a bachelor's degrees in art history and chemistry, and, in 1981, she received her master's degree from the Winterthur/UD Program in Art Conservation. In 2002, she was inducted into UD's Alumni Wall of Fame for her work in art conservation.

UD's art conservation department offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study with 25 conservators and conservation scientists. Graduate students in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture are taught by art conservators, museum professionals, University faculty and visiting scholars. UD and the Winterthur established this two-year curriculum in 1952 to promote the study of American decorative arts and material culture at the graduate level. The program's alumni hold distinguished positions in museums, antiques and auction houses, preservation organizations, historical societies, colleges and universities throughout the country.

Cost of the Nov. 19 event is $20 per person for both brunch and a tour. Space is limited. Interested alumni can register on line at [www.udel.edu/alumni].

For more information, contact the Office of Alumni and University Relations via e-mail at [AlumNet@udel.edu] or by phone at (302) 831-2341. For more information on Winterthur, visit [www.winterthur.org].
