Employees offered tickets to men’s basketball opener

4:29 p.m., Nov. 2, 2006--The University of Delaware men's basketball home opener has been designated UD Employee Day, and a limited number of free tickets will be available to University employees on a first-come, first-served basis.

The game, which will be the Fightin' Blue Hens' first under new Head Coach Monté Ross, will be played against Marist College on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The tip-off will be at 7 p.m., and UD employees are encouraged to come out and support Ross and the Hens as they begin the 2006-07 campaign.

Employees with valid UD identification can obtain up to four complimentary tickets each as long as supplies last, and the tickets are available at the University Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center, the YoUDee Shop at the Trabant University Center, and the UD season ticket office in the Delaware Field House beginning today.

Ross, who was named the Hens' head coach following a long and successful career as an assistant coach under Phil Martelli at St. Joseph's University, has brought new energy to the UD men's basketball program. He said he hopes to win over fans by putting on the court a team that not only plays hard but also plays efficiently.

Among the returning players are senior guard Calvin Cannon, who averaged 9 points per game last season, junior forward Herb Courtney and sophomore guard Zaire Taylor, who was named to the Colonial Athletic Association all-rookie team. Ross also has added two promising freshmen in guard Brian Johnson, who played at Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, and guard-forward Darrell Johnson from Howard High School in Wilmington.
