UD swimming teams earn quad meet wins

10:15 a.m., Nov. 6, 2006--The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team earned two victories and the men's team one as the Fightin' Blue Hens served as hosts for a Colonial Athletic Association quad meet held Friday and Saturday at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The UD women's team defeated Northeastern University 212-141 and Old Dominion University 251-102, and fell to the College of William & Mary 228-124. The Hens are now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the CAA.

The UD men's team defeated Old Dominion 206-141 and fell to William & Mary 201-150. Northeastern does not have a men's team. The Hens are now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

In events Saturday, Michelle Stephens was the lone winner for the UD women's team as she captured the 200 individual medley in 2:11.57. Maryann Walker finished second in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.84, Kellie Pastore finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.88 and Meredith Law finished second in the 500 freestyle in 5:10.63.

Also finishing second in events Saturday were the UD 200 medley relay team of Emily Smathers, Pastore, Stephanie House and Rachel Greene in 1:51.69, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Sarah Begley, Greene, Kendall Warren and Walker in 3:35.26. Smathers finished third in the 200 backstroke in 2:11.32, while Begley was third in the 100 butterfly in 59.26. UD's second 400 freestyle relay team of House, Cecily Connell, Cathy Gallagher and Law finished third in 3:40.80.

In action Friday, Pastore finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.62, while the 400 medley relay team of Emily Watts, Pastore, Begley and Walker finished second in 3:59.87. House finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 225.65 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Begley, Warren, Walker and Greene finished second in 1:39.45.

Walker finished third in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.55, while House finished third in the 200 butterfly in 2:09.85 and Law finished third in the 400 individual medley in 4:44.59.

In men's events Friday, UD's Andrew Zinn won the 50 freestyle in 21.28 and Matt Abbruzzese won the three-meter dive with a score of 284.40. The 200 freestyle relay team of Brendan Spencer, Adam Blomberg, John Ohlhaver and Zinn won in 1:27.36.

The UD 400 medley relay team of Adam Mullan, Matthew Rathbun, Troy Sattgast and Spencer finished second in 3:35.56, Blomberg finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.14, Sattgast finished second in the 200 butterfly in 1:58.54 and Ben Blotner finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 271.80.

Other third place finishes were recorded Friday by Joe Virion in the 1650 freestyle in 16:52.57, Ohlhaver in the 100 backstroke in 53.84, Rathbun in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.50, Garrett Arant in the 400 individual medley in 4:19.39, and Thomas Gallagher in the three-meter dive with a score of 213.80.

On Saturday, Abbruzzese won the one-meter dive with a score of 284.90, Zinn won the 100 freestyle in 47.57 and Spencer won the 200 individual medley in 2:01.07.

Finishing second in events Saturday were Blotner in the one-meter dive with a score of 235.70, the 200 medley relay team of Ohlhaver, Rathbun, Sattgast and Zinn in 1:39.44, Rathbun in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.64, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ohlhaver, Spencer, Blomberg and Zinn in 3:13.16. Gallagher finished third in the one-meter dive with a score of 229.00.

Both UD teams will return to action Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel University and the University of Vermont at 2 p.m.
