Talk by sculptor Claire Sherwood Tuesday
3:44 p.m., Nov. 9, 2006--Well-known sculptor Claire Sherwood is giving a lecture and showing samples of her work at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, in 112 McDowell Hall. For her sculptures, she collects and reclaims materials, such as coal and concrete, from industrial factories, along train tracks and in gravel pits. She is currently installing an exhibition of her work at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) in Wilmington, opening Wednesday, Nov. 15. Sherwood served as artist-in-residence at the DCCA this summer. An educator as well as an artist, she chose to work with a group of inmates from the Baylor Women's Correctional Institution. Together they worked on a painted quilt, a braided rug made of recycled plastic shopping bags and a video recorded by the women, which will all be part of the exhibition. Of her experience, Sherwood wrote, “Being an artist in residence at the DCCA this summer has been a wonderful experience....I am contributing to the community that is supporting my artistic growth; it's a two-way street.” Sherwood has had solo exhibitions at the Esther Allen Greer Museum of the University of Rio Grande in Gallipolis, Ohio, and at the Columbia Art Center in Maryland, and her work has been included in several invitational exhibitions in the Northeast and Ohio. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, majoring in sculpture and ceramics, Sherwood received New York State certification in structural welding from Hudson Valley Community College and her master's degree in fine arts from the University of Maryland. During an internship, Sherwood served as sculptor conservator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. She currently is an assistant professor at Marshall University in Huntington, W.V. |
