Prof. Judy McInnis dies

5:16 p.m., Nov. 16, 2006--Judy McInnis of Elkton, Md., former UD professor of Spanish and comparative literature, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 11, at the age of 63 after a lengthy illness.

Besides teaching Spanish at UD for 35 years, Dr. McInnis was active in UD's Study Abroad Program, the Mid-Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

McInnis began her career with the University in 1971, after serving two years in the Peace Corps in Santiago, Chile. She graduated summa cum laude from Bemidji State University in 1964 with bachelor of science degrees in both English and speech and drama, and a minor in Spanish. In 1974, she received her doctoral degree in comparative literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Over the course of her career, McInnis received several fellowships, grants and awards, including the Teacher of the Year Award in 1980 from the Delaware Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

“Judy was a member of our faculty for 35 years,” Richard Zipser, chairperson of UD's Department of Foreign Language and Literatures, said. “Those who worked or studied with her know what a wonderful person she was--kind and considerate, gentle and caring. She was totally dedicated to her students and her profession. We have lost a dear friend and colleague.”

Dr. McInnis is survived by her husband of 39 years, Clay Mcinnis Jr., and three children, including Meghan McInnis-Dominguez, who joined UD's Department of Foreign Language and Literatures earlier this fall as an instructor.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, at Gee Funeral Home, 259 East Main St., in Elkton. Receiving by family and friends will begin at noon. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to America Cancer Society care of the Gee Funeral Home.
