New scholarships for under-represented students 4:06 p.m., Nov. 14, 2006--The University of Delaware has established new scholarships for under-represented students studying for undergraduate degrees in hotel, restaurant and institutional management, thanks to a gift from the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation. The scholarships, which are available for under-represented students with above-average academic records pursuing a career in the hospitality industry, were made possible through a $250,000 gift from the Marriott Foundation, Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM) at UD, said. “Consistently ranked in the top-10 hospitality programs in the nation, the University of Delaware's Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management prepares students for successful careers as hospitality professionals, information managers and consultants,” DeMicco said. “The undergraduate curriculum consists of a strong liberal arts foundation, state-of-the-art business and hospitality management courses and hands-on work experience.” Herb Courtney, a junior HRIM major from Ambler, Pa., said the new scholarships will provides excellent opportunities for students to join HRIM, which offers a great learning environment. “I enjoy the variety of courses; I'm exposed to all aspects of the field, which helps prepare me for my future,” Courtney said. “I've built a great bond with my fellow classmates and professors.” “The HRIM faculty keep you abreast of upcoming activities, trends, and community service opportunities, and they share with you an overview of the hospitality industry from different perspectives,” Danielle Robinson, a junior HRIM major from Bear, said. “You get hands-on learning on campus at the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel and Vita Nova restaurant.
