UD again among leaders in study abroad

‘Red Paint,’ by Alicia Arcidiacono, taken in Tanzania, Winter Session 2006

5:28 p.m., Nov. 16, 2006--As the campus celebrates International Education Week, Nov. 12-17, the University of Delaware has once more been recognized as a leader in international study abroad programs, according to Lesa Griffiths, director of the Center for International Studies.

Each year in conjunction with International Education
Week, the Institute of International Education (IIE), founded in 1919 to support international educational exchange, releases its Open Door report on U.S. students studying abroad.

In its list of the top 20 doctoral/research institutions in terms of undergraduate participation in study abroad, UD is ranked in the top 20 and is the only public institution to appear on the list. “For the second year in a row, the University of Delaware is ranked number one among public doctoral/research institutions,” Griffiths said.

UD also is ranked 17 in the top 20 in terms of the total number of students studying abroad. “This is impressive because many other institutions on the list have enrollments that far exceed UD's enrollment,” Griffiths said.

Almost 42 percent of UD students will have participated in at least one study abroad program before they graduate, Griffiths said.

Open Doors reported that the majority of students going abroad do so in short-term programs during the summer or in January, which also is true of UD students. The most popular destinations are the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France and Australia--all favorites with UD students, Griffiths said.

Griffiths said she attributes the UD's success to faculty who develop innovative and academically challenging programs and accompany the students abroad.

The University also provides an exceptional level of staff support for study abroad faculty and offers a substantial study abroad scholarship program, Griffiths said.
