Freshman honored for work with Special Olympics

Freshman Kristen Cunningham with Baltimore Orioles “ironman” Cal Ripken Jr. at the Special Olympics Delaware awards

4:46 p.m., Nov. 10, 2006--Kristen Cunningham, a freshman elementary education major from Wilmington, recently was honored for her work with Special Olympics Delaware. Cunningham received the Outstanding Unified Partner Award. Unified partners are non-Special Olympic athletes who train and compete with Special Olympic teams, contributing in a positive way to the training and competitive experiences of Special Olympics athletes.

“I have been actively involved with Special Olympics since I was 9 and was a ball runner for the tennis team. I got involved because my aunt was the coach, and I needed service hours to graduate from high school. I love sports and the athletes I work with,” Cunningham said.

“Unified partners are sort of like coaches who are on the court playing with the athletes. I play volleyball and basketball with them, and I am the assistant coach for the bocce ball team. I also used to play softball for Adam's Angels,” she said.

"Perhaps the most important gift Kristen has given is the gift of inspiration,” Ann Gruner, executive director of Special Olympics Delaware, said. “She has inspired countless people around her by her shining example of what we can all achieve when we challenge ourselves to do more--be more--than we thought possible. There are many who volunteer. Few distinguish themselves by making such a compelling difference in the lives of so many."
