Prof. Kmiec to speak on Huntington’s disease on CN8 2:53 p.m., Nov. 27, 2006--Eric Kmiec, professor of biological sciences and director of the Laboratory of Genetic Medicine and Genomics at UD, will speak on Huntington's disease on Comcast Cable's CN8 Newsmakers series at 9:25 p.m. this evening, and at 4:25 a.m. and 12:25 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28. Huntington's disease, which often is masked as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, is an inherited, progressively degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of mental faculties and physical control. It is estimated that one in every 10,000 people in the United States has the disease, which can require the services of an army of health-care professionals There is no way to prevent or slow the progress of the disease, which can be predicted by a simple blood test. The Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) is a nonprofit voluntary health agency providing services and educational programs. Kmiec and Hetah Parekh-Olmedo, a scientist in UD's Department of Biological Sciences, are cofounders of the Delaware Affiliate of HDSA. |
