UD's Haney is selected Academic All-American
10:16 a.m., Nov. 28, 2006--University of Delaware senior defender Matt Haney has been named first team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American for men's soccer. Haney, a biological sciences major, was among 24 NCAA Division I players selected to the first and second teams based on their academic and athletic accomplishments. To be eligible for the team, scholar-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher and be a starter or key reserve for their team. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Haney was named to the Academic All-American team for the third straight year and earned first team honors for the second consecutive year. He also was a three-time first team District 2 All-Academic selection. He is the only scholar-athlete in UD history to earn first team Academic All-American honors two straight years. He carries a cumulative 3.96 grade point average for his college career. Haney was one of three Colonial Athletic Association players named an Academic All-American. Midfielder Ryan Overdevest of the College of William & Mary and forward Michael Todd of Hofstra University were named to the second team. Haney was named the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association scholar-athlete of the year for men's soccer and is a candidate again this season. He is also a four-time member of the CAA commissioner's academic honor roll. A four-year starter and two-time team most valuable player at UD, Haney started 15 games this season and anchored a defense that posted three shutouts and allowed just 1.38 goals per game. During his career, Haney played in 70 games with 69 starts and scored four goals. He also served as a team co-captain in each of his final three seasons. |
