New grants to fund Women’s Studies research

Celebrating their recent move into a new home at 34 West Delaware Ave. are Women’s Studies faculty and staff members (back, from left): Monika Shafi, Suzanne Cherrin, Emily Hayworth, Alvina Quintana and Margaret Stetz and (front, from right:) Jessica Schiffman, Marie Laberge, and Kathleen Turkel.

2:55 p.m., Nov. 14, 2006--UD's Women's Studies program has announced the creation of Women's Studies Research Awards (WSRA) for faculty, undergraduate and graduate students. Provost Dan Rich will grant the program a three-year grant of $75,000 each year for the awards, which are designed to support University-wide research on women and gender within and across disciplines.

Monika Shafi, director of Women's Studies and Elias Ahuja Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, said the program was invited in the spring to submit a proposal for the funds. The idea of the proposal, Shafi said, was to strengthen research in Women's Studies and gender across the university.

“We are very excited about it,” Shafi said. “It's a wonderful opportunity.”

Shafi said the program is hoping to hold a research symposium to combine the work of the faculty, graduate students and undergraduates who have received the awards. She said the grant is a validation and recognition of the program's strength and the value of gender research.

“The University considers women's research important,” she said. “We are the largest program at the University and the largest interdisciplinary program at the University.”

Shafi said more than 3,500 students are currently enrolled in Women's Studies courses.

Faculty Summer Research Awards (FSRA) are for any level of faculty and are open to all departments, programs and colleges at the University. The grant must support research in women's studies and should lead to the development of a Women's Studies course. Four grants of $6,000 each will be awarded. For awards criteria and an application, visit [www.udel.edu/WomensStudies/awards/facultyBase.html].

Graduate students will have the opportunity to obtain one of three types of graduate research awards (WGRA). A $14,000 graduate teaching award and a $14,000 dissertation fellowships award, as well as a $1,000 travel award will be offered to applicants. Only three grants will be awarded. For awards criteria and an application, visit [www.udel.edu/WomensStudies/awards/graduateBase.html].

Three types of women's studies awards are available for undergraduate students for semester and summer research. The Undergraduate Semester Research Assistants award, the Collaborative Summer Research Project award, and the Service Learning Through Internships award are offered to students who wish to pursue women's studies research. For awards criteria and an application, visit [www.udel.edu/WomensStudies/awards/undergraduateBase.html].
