Sophomore spins 'Wheel of Fortune' Nov.23

Sophomore Rob Greathouse

2:28 p.m., Nov. 17, 2006--Give me a W, give me an I, give me an N!

Sophomore Rob Greathouse doesn't say how he made out on Wheel of Fortune, taped last summer and being aired locally at 7:30 p.m., Thanksgiving Day, on WPVI-TV6, but he can say it was a fantastic experience, and he did not end up empty-handed.

Last spring while surfing the net, he came across the application and decided why not try out. He had almost forgotten about it when he was invited to audition in a hotel in Washington, D.C., with other contestants. “We had to fill out a form, telling about ourselves and something unusual about ourselves. I wrote that I had been born with teeth, but they never used that,” he said.

“We then played Wheel of Fortune-type games and were given a long puzzle test to do in five minutes,” Greathouse recalled. He said he'd always enjoyed word puzzles and was able to see patterns so filled out most of the test. The original 48 contestants were whittled down to 16.

“We were told we would hear in two weeks if we would be on the show. The two weeks passed, and I had not heard a word and put it out of my mind. Then four weeks later, as I was driving to a friend's house, I had a call on my cell phone saying I had been chosen and to call back. I was totally astounded,” Greathouse said.

He flew to Los Angeles in August with family members and five shows were taped beginning at 5:30 a.m. He met letter turner Vana White (“very nice and thinner than she looks on TV,” he said) and met quizmaster Pat Sajak when the show actually was taped.

Enthusiasm was an important part of the show, he said, and he got carried away and asked for an “S” when it was already on the board. On the show, Greathouse talked mostly about the University of Delaware and how the Fightin' Blue Hens designation came about.

Greathouse, who is from Newark, is majoring in food science and technology, and he said his goals, at this point, are to graduate and to keep up his GPA.
