Delaware football ends season with loss to VU

Sophomore wide receiver Kervin Michaud electrified the crowd with a 57-yard touchdown catch and run to put the Hens ahead 27-14 at the half. Unfortunately, Villanova rallied for a 28-27 win.

11:09 a.m., Nov. 20, 2006--The University of Delaware football team squandered a 20-point lead and fell 28-27 to Villanova University in an Atlantic 10 Conference football game played Saturday at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium. The Fightin' Blue Hens jumped in front 20-0 and held a 27-14 lead at halftime but failed to score in the second half as Villanova rallied for a pair of touchdowns.

With the loss, UD fell to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the conference. It is the Hens' first losing season since 2001 and just its second since 1987. The game was the last for the Hens in the Atlantic 10, as the teams in the conference will move under the banner of the Colonial Athletic Association beginning in 2007.

“We are very disappointed because we put ourselves in good position to win this ballgame, and we didn't get it done,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler, who suffered his first losing campaign in 14 seasons as a college head coach, said. “Losing seasons are not acceptable here at the University of Delaware. It's going to be a long, hard off-season for us as coaches and as players. Starting tomorrow we're going to wash this season away. I'm disappointed we couldn't send our seniors out the right way.”

“This was typical Delaware-Villanova game,” Andy Talley, the head coach, said. “We were down 20-0 and I wasn't sure we had enough firepower to come back or keep up with them. I went into halftime incredibly upset. I thought it would be insurmountable to come back. But our defense came out and played well in the second half and we hung in there to win the game.”

UD junior quarterback Joe Flacco completed 30 of 41 passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns, those to tight end Ben Patrick and wide receiver Kervin Michaud. The latter was a 57-yard play that sent the Hens into halftime with 27 points.

Junior running back Omar Cuff carried the ball 20 times for 83 yards and one touchdown and also caught seven passes for 71 yards. Wide receiver Aaron Love caught seven passes for 69 yards and Mark Duncan caught six for 64 yards.

UD placekicker Zach Hobby missed one field goal from 36 yards early in the fourth quarter and had a second blocked to close out the game. He also missed an extra point attempt.
