Blue Hen football team defeats William & Mary

UD wide receiver Aaron Love has had more than 100 receiving yards in four consecutive games.

1:11 p.m., Nov. 13, 2006--With a healthy Omar Cuff and a rejuvenated defense, the University of Delaware football team defeated the College of William & Mary 28-14 in an Atlantic 10 Conference game played Saturday afternoon at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference. They will close the season with a home game against 5-5 Villanova University, which is coming off a 21-20 victory over James Madison University, at 1 p.m., Saturday. That game will be the final Atlantic 10 game for the longtime rivals, as both will be joining the Colonial Athletic Association next season.

In the victory over William & Mary, UD got outstanding performances in the air, on the ground and on defense. “It feels good just to win again,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. “I think we have been embarrassed as coaches and players the last few weeks with our play on defense. It was refreshing today to see the defense step up and make plays. That was the key to the ballgame. You have to make a few big plays to get your confidence back and that's what we did today. It was also nice to get Omar back. He was still only playing at maybe 85 percent but he's better than most players when they are at 100 percent. He's one of the best players in the country and we need him.”

The defense limited William & Mary to 324 total yards and intercepted Tribe quarterback Mike Potts three times. The pickoffs were by linebacker Erik Johnson and defensive backs Fred Andrew and Kyle Campbell. Johnson led the team with 15 tackles.

On offense, Cuff, who had missed four of the last fives games with an ankle injury, had 17 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Joe Flacco completed 28 of 39 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Aaron Love had eight catches for 106 yards. It was the fourth straight game in which Love has had 100 or more yards receiving.
