Hofstra defeats Hens in CAA tournament play

UD’s Alexis Esbitt scored in the CAA tournament loss to Hofstra.

9:14 a.m., Nov. 2, 2006--The University of Delaware field hockey team took an early lead but was unable to hold on and was knocked out of the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament 2-1 by Hofstra University in a quarterfinal round game played Wednesday night at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.

UD went ahead 1-0 early in the first half as freshman Alexis Esbitt scored on a breakaway. She fired a shot on Hofstra goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait and then knocked home the rebound. Hofstra came back with two goals in the second half, both scored off penalty corners. UD goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades finished the game with five saves.

“We had to find a way to get shots on goal today but we didn't do that,” UD Head Coach Carol Miller said. “This season was a positive one in the fact that we had a lot of new faces on the field and that youth will be a positive for us next year. At times our freshmen played like seasoned players. Because of all the injuries we had this year, it was a roller-coaster season. We had a lot of ups and downs.”

The most recent injury was suffered by All-CAA back Molly Burke, who was unable to play in the tournament game following a concussion suffered in practice Tuesday.
