Reindeer Run and Romp new to Winterfest Dec. 1 3:08 p.m., Nov. 27, 2006--A new addition to Winterfest, scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1, in downtown Newark, is the inaugural 5K Reindeer Run and 1K Reindeer Romp to benefit Special Olympics Delaware. Both runs are scheduled in the evening on paths lit by luminaries and lined with entertainers. All runners will receive long sleeve T-shirts, jingle bells and coupons from merchants on Main Street. Kids will receive antlers to wear on the Romp. The 5K run begins at 6:30 p.m. in front of Aetna Fire Company, at the intersection of Academy Street and Delaware Avenue. Runners will proceed south on Academy to the new James F. Hall Trail and return to Academy and Main for awards. The 1K Reindeer Romp will take place on campus, near the Morris Library, and will begin at 6:45 p.m. Raindate for both events is Saturday, Dec. 2, at the same times and locations. Participants may register online or print out a registration form by visiting the Special Olympics Delaware web site at [www.sode.org]. Same-day registration is $25, with a sign-up table opening at 5 p.m. Awards and prizes will be presented to overall male and female champions, as well as various age group winners. The event is supported by the City of Newark and the UD community with various businesses, clubs, sororities and organizations volunteering for the event. Among the UD groups participating in the event are Alpha Sigma Alpha, the Yoga Club, Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, Phi Sigma Sigma, the Running Club, the Chinese Cultural Student Association and Delaware Dance Fever. Businesses lending their support include Panera Bread, Newark Camera Shop, Klondike Date's, Home Grown Café and Bloom. Other highlights of Winterfest include the city's tree lighting, visits from Santa, holiday entertainment, roasted chestnuts and hot cocoa, ice sculpture demonstrations and carriage rides.
