Winter Faculty Institute kick-off event Jan. 8

3:56 p.m., Nov. 27, 2006--UD's 2007 Winter Faculty Institute kicks off Monday, Jan. 8. The event features two outstanding presentations about technology's potential to assist in curricular reform and student portfolios to enhance and deepen learning. The daylong event will be held in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.

Morning program

8:30 a.m.
Continental breakfast for participants

9 a.m.
Robert Lue, director of life sciences education and a dean and senior lecturer in molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University, will launch the institute with his keynote address on “Technology's Role in Curricular Transformation.” Following the address, UD staff and faculty will discuss some of UD's campus resources. Lue will then present an interactive workshop.

Lunch and facilitated discussions led by experienced UD staff and faculty on uses for the new Student Multimedia Design Center, Personal Response Systems (PRS)-also called “clickers”-other interactive classroom tools, student engagement and emerging technologies.

John Zubizarreta
Afternoon program

1:30 p.m.
John Zubizarreta, professor of English, director of honors and faculty development, and former dean of undergraduate studies at Columbia College in South Carolina, will discuss his book Learning Portfolios: Reflective Practice for Improving Student Learning. UD faculty and students will contribute their experiences in this area.

Register online by Friday, Dec. 15, at [http://present.smith.udel.edu/calendar/detail.php?classid=995]. The next 15 UD faculty members who register for the full day will receive a free copy of Zubizarreta's book The Learning Portfolio: Reflective Practice for Improving Student Learning.

The Winter Faculty Institute is a month-long series of events designed to enhance teaching and learning using technology. The institute is co-sponsored by the University of Delaware Library, Center for Teaching Effectiveness, Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education, Office of Educational Assessment, IT-User Services and the College of Arts and Sciences.
