Delaware cross country competes in NCAA meet

Julia Somers led the UD women’s team to its best finish since 1999 in the NCAA regional cross country meet.

1:03 p.m., Nov. 13, 2006--The University of Delaware women's cross-country team raced to its best finish since 1999, capturing 10th place, and the men's team finished 16th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional championships held Saturday at Lock Haven (Pa.) University.

UD sophomore Julia Somers finished 34th overall in a time of 21:43.9 to lead the women's team, which placed four runners in the top 100. Junior Colleen O'Brien finished 52nd (22:00.1), freshman Christina Antonopoulos 54th (22:03.7), freshman Ioanna Antonopoulos 75th (22:31.7), sophomore Brooke Maguire 102nd (22:55.9), freshman Kellyn Wright 128th (23:27.2) and sophomore Lindsay Schmiedel 154th (24:14.5).

Senior Kyle Schmid led the UD men's team as he covered the course in 32:39.0 to finish in 70th place. Sophomore Gregg Cantwell finished 84th (32:50.9), freshman Nick Pyle 98th (33:08.2), sophomore Kevin Kemmerle 126th (33:49.5), sophomore Jimmy Daly 135th (34:14.8), freshman Chris Bourke 143rd (34:43.6) and junior Mike Zeberkiewicz 156th (35:42.3).

UD will close the 2006 season at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America (IC4A) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships to be held Saturday at Van Cortlandt State Park in New York City.
