Prof wins photo contest
3:58 p.m., Nov. 15, 2006--Marianna Safronova, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, won first place for her photo of a fox squirrel in the snow in BetterPhoto.com's September photograph contest. In announcing the winners, the site's founder, Jim Miotke, called Safronova's work “stunning.” More than 23,500 entries were submitted to the online contest, which attracted contestants from around the world. The monthly contest features entries in 10 categories, including nature and landscapes, animals, people, elements of design, digital darkroom, travel and place, flowers, details and macro, special effects and a monthly theme. Safronova won in the animal category. Her winning photo can be seen at [www.betterphoto.com/contest/winners/0609.asp]. “I like to photograph things that are beautiful--flowers, landscapes--nature, mostly,” she said. She said she took the photo of the fox squirrel in Indiana on the University of Notre Dame campus five years ago when she was doing postdoctoral research there and used Photoshop software to give the picture a brush painting look. “I went through the entire image using smudge strokes. It took me hours. It's very much like painting only with an electronic brush,” she said. Entries are judged by a panel of professional photographers. |
