New UD Computing Museum opens Nov. 21

4:07 p.m., Nov. 14, 2006--The inaugural exhibition of the Computing Museum at the University of Delaware will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, in the foyer of Smith Hall.

The exhibit showcases hardware, software and the role of individuals, while offering historical perspectives of major computing discoveries and transitions.

The museum is an interdisciplinary effort between UD's Department of Computer and Information Sciences and the Museum Studies Program. Curators include Lori Pollock, professor of computer and information sciences, and Paul Amer, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Computer and information Sciences.

Staff contributors to the exhibit also include Chandra Reedy, professor of museum studies, and Janet Gardner Broske, curator, University Museums.

Following introductory remarks by Amer, a pair of sculptures created from computer components by Ronald Longsdorf, a junior, and Charles Mahley, a graduate student, both in the College of Arts and Sciences, will be unveiled.

Student contributors also include junior Lauren Bradley and sophomore Davina Kuh, both art conservation and art history majors, and juniors Stephen Mahoney, a computer science major, Yana Novikova, a computer science major, and Rachael Tannen, an anthropology major.

The Computing Museum at the University of Delaware is funded by a Unidel Transformation Grant from the College of Arts and Sciences.
