Margaret Cho draws near capacity crowd
4:39 p.m., Nov. 17, 2006--More than 570 UD students and members of the University and Newark communities packed the Multipurpose Rooms in the Trabant University Center Thursday evening, Nov. 16, to catch Margaret Cho's stand-up comedy routine. The popular comedienne, whose routines include political send-ups, over-the-top takes on stereotypes and skits on popular culture, drew laughs and applause all evening, and maintained a good rapport with the audience. Cho, who began performing stand-up comedy at 16 in San Francisco's Haight-Asbury district, where she grew up, hit the college circuit in her early 20s and soon became the most booked act, rising to the attention of both Arsenio Hall and Bob Hope, who brought her to television audiences. She has completed several sold-out national tours, has starred in two comedic films aired on channels owned by Showtime Cable Network, and has written two well-received books containing essays on politics, society and contemporary culture. The event was cosponsored by UD's Asian Heritage Council; East Southeast Asian Union; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning Lecture Series; Office of Women's Affairs; Cultural Programming Advisory Board; HAVEN; Student Centers Programming Advisory Board; and Delaware Action Committee.
