Spirit teams headed to nationals

12:06 p.m., Nov. 21, 2006--UD's mascot, dance and cheerleading teams are headed for the annual national championships for yet another year, continuing their long-running winning streak.

Set to compete against other Division I mascot, dance and cheerleading teams from across the country Jan. 12-14 at Disney World, in Orlando, Fla., UD's spirit triumvirate has high hopes for victory and plenty of enthusiasm.

UD's Cheerleading Team dazzled national championship judges with its stunts, tumbling and baskets, to place second in the Division I category, missing first place by only eight points (out of 500). For its hard work, the team will be one of only two teams nationwide (the honor goes to first- and second-place winners) to be awarded a paid bid that includes travel expenses to and from, as well as hotel accommodations while at the national championships.

“We are all very proud of this grand achievement,” Andy Brown, UD head cheerleading coach, said. “What makes this accomplishment even better is that the team we currently have has great chemistry.”

UD's Dance Team also pulled high honors by ranking third (and tying with last year's winner) with their jazz routine against 20 other Division I entries nationwide.

“I have a very young team that has worked very hard on its routines since August,” Nicole Daliessio-Zehnder, UD's dance team head coach, said. “I'm ecstatic that we have ranked so high with so many other reputable Division I dance teams, and that we are currently tied with last year's winner sets us up for a great possible victory in the jazz category.”

Also pulling high honors was UD's mascot team, which wowed the panel of judges with its winning antics and originality.

“We are thrilled to be invited down again this year,” Sharon Harris, assistant director of UD's Office of Public Relations and YoUDee mascot coordinator, said. “Our mascot team placed sixth this year out of 36 entries nationwide, and only the top 10 get invited down.”
