Blue Hen softball team loses, ties at Bucknell

8:09 a.m., May 2, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team lost 4-1 in the opening game of a doubleheader at Bucknell University on Tuesday afternoon and tied 2-2 in the nightcap, which was called because of darkness.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 15-24-3 on the season. They will finish the regular season with a three game Colonial Athletic Association series at Georgia State University in Atlanta. The teams will meet in a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, May 5, and will play a single game at noon, Sunday, May 6.

The Hens are 6-11 in the conference and are not yet eliminated from a chance to reach the four-team championship tournament. Hofstra University and James Madison University have the top two spots locked up, with identical records of 14-3 in the CAA, while UD, Georgia State, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Towson University and Drexel University are still in contention for the final two spots.

Georgia State is 30-27 overall and 9-8 in the conference. UNC Wilmington is 9-9 in the CAA, Towson is 8-9 and both UD and Drexel are 6-11.

In the 4-1 loss to Bucknell, UD got three hits from right fielder Katie DeSalvo, who scored the lone run. Senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat went the distance and took the loss, falling to 9-15 on the season.

In the 2-2 tie, UD got two hits apiece from second baseman Allison Borchers and first baseman Michelle Kenney. Borchers and shortstop Kim Ovittore scored for the Hens, and Kenney and designated hitter Barbara Traynor drove in the runs. Samantha Shawn was on the mound for UD.
