Talk on 'Playing with Anger' slated for May 9
Howard Stevenson
2:12 p.m., May 7, 2007--“Playing with Anger: Appreciating the Cultural Strivings of African-American Boys” is the topic of a lecture by Howard Stevenson of the University of Pennsylvania, at 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 9, in 127 Memorial Hall. A reception will follow.

Stevenson will discuss research based on his PLAAY (Preventing Long-term Anger and Aggression in Youth) model, a culturally relevant intervention that involves emotional empowerment through athletic movement (basketball), self-control (martial arts), cultural pride and bonding in families. The intervention program has been shown to help African-American youths with a history of aggressive behavior to manage their anger in school settings.
