Blue Hen baseball falls to VCU in tournament
Alex Buchholz hit a three-run homer in the loss to Virginia Commonwealth.
4:28 p.m., May 26, 2007--The University of Delaware baseball team fell 10-4 in extra innings to Virginia Commonwealth University in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament on Saturday afternoon in Wilmington, N.C. With the loss, the Fightin' Blue Hens were eliminated and Virginia Commonwealth was crowned the 2007 conference champion.

The Hens fell behind 1-0 after two innings but bounced back on a three-run home run by shortstop Alex Buchholz in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Kyle Davis, who had walked, and first baseman Ryan Jablonski, who had singled, scored on the blast.

UD scored again in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1 when designated hitter Bill Merkler singled home left fielder Bryan Hagerich.

Virginia Commonwealth came back in the sixth, scoring a run off UD starting pitcher Matt Heppner to cut the lead to 4-2. However, Heppner escaped with no further damage, leaving runners stranded at first and third.

Virginia Commonwealth broke through with two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score 4-4, and the game remained deadlocked into extra innings with Billy Harris on the mound for the Hens.

UD's David Slovak entered the game in the 13th inning, and Virginia Commonwealth quickly loaded the bases on a hit batter, a walk and an error and proceeded to score four runs as the Hens brought on a new pitcher in Dan Richardson. Virginia Commonwealth continued its assault and heading into the bottom of the 13th, the Hens trailed 10-4 and were unable to get a base runner.
