Blue Hens fall to VCU in CAA baseball tourney

7:54 a.m., May 25, 2007--The University of Delaware baseball team fell 10-6 to Virginia Commonwealth University in a Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament game played Thursday in Wilmington, N.C.

The Fightin' Blue Hens will return to action at noon, Friday, when they face George Mason University in an elimination game.

In the loss to Virginia Commonwealth, the Hens fell behind 6-2 before rallying to tie the game with a four-run eighth inning. However, Virginia Commonwealth answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning for the win.

UD catcher Ryan Engelhardt had two hits, a double and a home run, and drove in four runs. Shortstop Alex Buchholz also hit a home run. Pitcher Brent Gaphardt started the game for the Hens and closer David Slovak suffered the loss.

Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth, both 2-0 in the tournament, will meet at 3:30 p.m. If the Hens win, they will play at 7 p.m., Friday, against the loser of that game.
