UD baseball prepares for CAA tournament

8:31 a.m., May 21, 2007--The University of Delaware baseball team took two of three games against James Madison University in a weekend series played at Bob Hannah Stadium to finish with a record of 29-21 overall and 18-11 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Fightin' Blue Hens finished in a four-way tie for first place in the CAA and earned the second seed in the six-team conference championship tournament, which will be played May 23-26 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

In opening day action Wednesday, top seed Old Dominion University will meet Georgia State University at noon, the Hens will take on George Mason University at 3:30 p.m. and Virginia Commonwealth University will meet UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.

UD defeated James Madison 6-1 on Thursday and 10-0 on Friday before falling 5-4 on Saturday.

In Thursday's victory, UD senior pitcher Billy Harris set a new record with his 73rd career appearance. He went six innings, allowing just three hits and one run, to get the win. Matt Heppner and David Slovak worked three scoreless innings.

UD third baseman Ryan Jablonski had three hits, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Center fielder Brandon Menchaca had two hits, including a home run, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Catcher Ryan Engelhardt had a pair of hits and first baseman Adam Tsakonas drove in two runs.

In Friday's victory, pitchers Brent Gaphardt and Chad Kerfoot combined for the shutout, giving up just four hits on the afternoon. Gaphardt got the win.

Left fielder Bryan Hagerich had three hits, including a home run, and Menchaca had two hits and drove in three runs. Right fielder Scott Shockley had two hits, drove in two runs and scored two runs.

In Sunday's loss, UD mounted a ninth inning rally but it fell just short and starter Mike McGuire took the loss. Tsakonas and Engelhardt had three hits apieace, with Tsakonas hitting a home run, and shortstop Alex Buchholz drove in two runs.
