Blue Hen Weekend: CAA lacrosse playoffs
UD’s Nicole Flego is the CAA rookie of the year.
8:37 a.m., May 4, 2007--The University of Delaware men's and women's lacrosse teams will compete in Colonial Athletic Association championship tournaments this weekend, both on the road.

The Fightin' Blue Hens women's team will meet James Madison University in a CAA semifinal game to be played at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 4, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

Hofstra, which earned the right to host the tournament by winning the regular season championship, will meet Old Dominion University in the other semifinal game.

The championship game will be played at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 6, also at Hofstra.

UD enters the semifinal game with a record of 11-5 and ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division I, while James Madison is 12-4 and ranked No. 17. The Hens featured five All-CAA players, including freshman attach Nicole Flego, who was named the conference rookie of the year and was selected both to the conference all-rookie team and to the all-conference first team. Flego finished the season with 33 goales and 20 assists.

Senior Katie Muth and sophomore Debbie Sloan were named second team All-CAA, and freshmen Courtney Aburn and Emily Schaknowski joined Flego on the all-rookie team. Muth had 34 goals and 13 assists and Sloan had 36 goals. Aburn had 33 goals and nine assists and Schaknowski had 16 goals, 16 assists, 27 ground balls and 20 draw controls.

They will be facing the CAA player of the year in James Madison's Annie Wagner, who led the conference with 55 goals.

The UD men's lacrosse team has advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game with an 11-7 victory over host Drexel University in a tournament semifinal played on Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

The 10-5 Fightin' Blue Hens will meet top seed Towson University in a game to be played at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 5, at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium. The Tigers advanced with an 11-5 victory over Hofstra University.

UD will be looking to capture its first CAA tournament title and its first conference championship since winning the 1999 America East crown. The CAA champion earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I championship tournament.

This is the third straight year the Hens have reached the CAA championship game, falling to Towson in 2005 and Hofstra in 2006. Even with a loss in the title game, the Hens could receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

In other weekend action, the UD baseball team will be at home to play a CAA series against the College of William and Mary at Bob Hannah Stadium. The teams will meet at 3 p.m., Friday, May 4, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6. The Hens are 20-18 overall and 11-9 in the conference, good for third place.

Also at home, the UD track and field teams will compete in the Delaware Open to be held beginning at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 5, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium track.

The UD rowing team will compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in Worchester, Mass., on Saturday and Sunday, and the softball team will play a three-game series at Georgia State University in Atlanta. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, and a single game at noon, Sunday.
