Blue Hen baseball team wins series at VCU

8:42 a.m., May 14, 2007--The University of Delaware baseball team clinched a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament by winning two of three games in a weekend series against Virginia Commonwealth University at The Diamond in Richmond.

With the victories, the Fightin' Blue Hens are 27-19 overall and 16-10 in the CAA. The Hens are in second place in the conference, one game behind Old Dominion University.

UD will return to action with a game at Rutgers University at 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 15. They will close the regular season with a three-game weekend series against James Madison University at Bob Hannah Stadium. The teams will meet at 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 17-18, and at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 19.

The CAA championship tournament will be played May 23-26 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

In the series against Virginia Commonwealth, the Hens dropped the opening game 6-5 on Friday but then won 3-1 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday.

Friday's game was tied 5-5 until Virginia Commonwealth pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Pitcher Matt Heppner, who came on in relief of Billy Harris, took the loss. Shortstop Alex Buchholz had two hits and scored two runs, and left fielder Bryan Hagerich drove in three runs.

On Saturday, senior pitcher Chad Kerfoot worked eight innings and allowed just one run while striking out five batters. Reliever David Slovak earned his 10th save of the season. The Hens had just six hits but three of them were doubles, by third baseman Ryan Jablonski, designated hitter Bill Merkler and second baseman Kyle Davis.

On Sunday, Brent Gaphardt allowed only two hits over six shutout innings to earn his third win, and Mike McGuire and David Slovak shut down Virginia Commonwealth in four innings of relief. UD scored its first run in the third inning on a single by Jablonski that brought home catcher Ryan Engelhardt. The winning run came in the fifth, when Buchholz scored on a double by Hagerich.
