Delaware baseball team sweeps W&M series

8:29 a.m., May 7, 2007--The hot hitting University of Delaware baseball team swept a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series over the College of William and Mary this weekend at Bob Hannah Stadium, raising its record to 23-18 overall and 14-9 in the conference.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who have gone 17-3 since falling to Georgia State University on April 1, are now in second place in the conference just one game back of both Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University, both 15-8.

Following a pair of midweek nonconference games, at Temple University on Tuesday, May 8, and at LaSalle University on Wednesday, May 9, the Hens will play a key CAA weekend series at Virginia Commonwealth. The teams will meet at 7 p.m., Friday, May 11, at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 12, and at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 13.

Against William and Mary, UD took Friday's opener 10-6 as starter Billy Harris picked up his fifth win of the season and David Slovak worked the final two innings to earn his eighth save. Center fielder Brandon Menchaca had four hits for the Hens and first baseman Adam Tsakonas hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to secure the win.

UD won 8-4 on Saturday as senior right-hander Chad Kerfoot (3-2) pitched the second complete game of his career. Designated hitter Bill Merkler hit a three-run home run in the fifth.

The Hens rode a five-run third inning to an 8-3 victory in Sunday's game, with Slovak earning his ninth save. In the third inning, second baseman Kyle Davis hit a two-run homer and shortstop Alex Buchholz hit a two-run triple. Right fielder Danny Overcash had a three-run home run in the sixth to extend the lead.
