International public administration conference opens at UD

3:31 p.m., May 31, 2007--More than 120 participants from 20 countries are at UD attending The Third Transatlantic Dialogue, an international conference on the role of leaders in shaping the future through international dialogue and strengthening and broadening the base of public administration leadership, which began today and continues through Saturday, June 2, at Clayton Hall.

“Leading the Future of the Public Sector” is a sequel to the first two transatlantic dialogues, “Ethics and Integrity of Governance” and “A Performing Public Sector,” which were held in Belgium in 2005 and 2006, respectively. This is the first time that the event is being held in the United States.

Keynote speakers will be Patricia Ingraham, founding dean of the College of Community and Public Affairs at Binghamton University, and Christopher Hood, director of the Public Services Programme at All Souls College, University of Oxford. Robert Denhardt, will lead a workshop featuring his new book, “The Dance of Leadership.” The closing plenary session will feature Geert Bouckaert, director of the Public Management Institute at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

The conference presentations will be made in six workshops, “Leading for the Future,” “Diverse Leaders and Leading in a Diverse Workforce,” “Training and Developing Leaders,” “Leading in a Multi-Sector Environment,” “Leadership and the New Public Management,” and “Ethical Leadership in the Context of Globalization.”

The conference is jointly organized by the American (ASPA) and European (EGPA) networks on public administration research and public personnel policies. It is co-sponsored by UD's School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and the Institute for Public Administration at UD and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven's Public Management Institute.
