UD women’s basketball hosts DelState in WNIT

10:04 a.m., June 14, 2007--The University of Delaware women's basketball team will face Delaware State University in a Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament first round game to be played Friday, Nov. 9, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Both UD and Delaware State reached the NCAA Division I championship tournament this year, and both played in first round games at Michigan State University. There, the Fightin' Blue Hens fell 69-58 to the host team and Delaware State fell 62-47 to Vanderbilt University.

The winner will meet either the University of Maryland or Princeton University, who will play Nov. 9 at College Park, Md. Also on UD's side of the draw are Western Kentucky University, East Tennessee State University, the University of Notre Dame and Miami University of Ohio.

The other side of the draw features Louisiana State University, Samford University, Texas Christian University, Radford University, the University of Evansville, Marshall University, Michigan State and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

All 16 teams in the Preseason WNIT tournament are guaranteed three games through the addition of special consolation brackets.

UD Head Coach Tina Martin's team finished the 2006-07 season 26-6 overall and 16-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Hens have graduated Tyresa Smith, one of the top guards in the history of the program, along with point guard Alena Koshansky and forward Chrissy Fisher. Key returning players include guard Kyle DeHaven and forward Courtney Irving.

Delaware State finished 20-13 last season and won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.
