5:21 p.m., June 29, 2007--Katie Evans, who closed out an outstanding career with the University of Delaware field hockey squad last fall, has been selected to the 2007-08 U. S. Field Hockey squad.

A native of Newtown Square, Pa., where she attended Villa Maria Academy, Evans was named to the team following a week of play at the national championships in Virginia Beach, Va.

The selections were announced as the national team prepares for the Pan American Games to be held from July 15-29, in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. The games represent an opportunity for the U.S. squad to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Evans, who graduated in May with a degree in apparel design and fashion merchandising, was named to the nine-member developmental squad, whose members can be called up for training sessions or other competition opportunities with the U.S. national squad.

Career honors for Evans include second team All-Colonial Athletic Association and second team All-Mid Atlantic Region honors during both the 2003 and 2005 seasons.

A member of the 2005 U.S. Junior National World Cup team that competed in Chile, Evans was a four-year standout at UD for Head Coach Carol Miller, and helped the Fightin' Blue Hens take the CAA title and secure an NCAA tournament berth.

As a senior, Evans ranked third in team scoring, with six goals and seven assists for the 2006-07 season.

Appearing in 74 career games, including 68 starts, Evans scored 51 points on 21 goals and 30 assists. Her career mark of 30 assists is second on the all-time list at UD.

The winner of the Pan Am Games will earn an automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games, and teams placing second through sixth place in the women's tournament will earn spots in one of three Olympic qualifying tournaments in early 2008. The winners of the three qualifying tournaments will earn the final three berths in the Olympics.

Following the Pan Am Games, the national team will continue international competition by hosting a five-game series against Japan Oct. 7-13, at the University of Maryland. Japan edged the U.S. for fifth place in a 1-0 classification match at the 2006 World Cup and has already qualified for the Olympic Games.
