University Organist receives honorary doctorate
David Herman
10:30 a.m., June 13, 2007--David Herman, Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music and University Organist, was awarded a Doctor of Music honoris causa degree by Nashota House, an Episcopal Church seminary in Wisconsin, at the seminary's commencement ceremony in May. Herman was cited for his “outstanding achievements and contributions...to the field of organ music.” He also performed an organ recital at Nashota House during commencement week.

“I was surprised, honored and pleased,” Herman said of the recognition. “It was an interesting ceremony that was all in Latin where each seminarian was presented to the faculty for approval.”

Herman chaired the UD Department of Music from 1987-2001 and holds degrees from Wittenberg University, the University of Michigan and the University of Kansas. He is an internationally known recitalist who frequently tours in Europe and has played on many of the world's greatest organs. He recorded a CD, Music by Samuel Wesley, at England's Coventry Cathedral and is the author of The Life and Work of Jan Bender. His compositions and editions have appeared in the catalogues of five American publishers.
