Sussex County Master Gardeners open house set July 14
11:05 a.m., June 28, 2007--The Sussex County Master Gardeners will hold an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, July 14, at their Demonstration Garden, near Georgetown.

The garden is planted with annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs, vegetables and shade-loving plants. There also are container gardens, raised beds, a water garden, a bog garden and a butterfly garden.

Highlights of the day will include a Sick Plant Clinic, where visitors with plant problems can bring a sample for identification and recommended remedies, and a Youth and Entomology Event for kids to learn about insects and complete craft projects. At 11:30 a.m., samples of fresh vegetables grown in the vegetable garden will be offered.

Additionally, Master Gardeners will staff information stations throughout the garden offering information on composting, lawns, proper techniques for taking a soil test and the “Livable Delaware” program. Information about gardening in Sussex County and a program on garden tool maintenance, safety and sharpening also will be available. Visitors may bring favorite garden tools along to have them sharpened.

Visitors also are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch to eat in the shaded picnic grove.

The event is offered by Delaware Cooperative Extension for both Delaware State University and the University of Delaware. There is no rain date.

The garden is located at 16483 County Seat Highway, Route 9, west of Georgetown. Traveling west, it is about 4.5 miles from the intersection of Routes 113 and 9, just past Sussex Technical High School, on the right. Turn right just after the gazebo at the Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center.
