Blue-Gold All-Stars to meet June 23 at UD

10:40 a.m., June 14, 2007--Delaware's 52nd annual Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game will be played on Saturday, June 23, at Delaware Stadium. Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. and kick-off is at 7 p.m. There will be a fireworks display after the game.

The event is an annual fundraiser for the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with Cognitive disABILITIES (DFRC). The group's mission is to raise awareness of the abilities of people with cognitive disabilities and provide funding to support enrichment programs to maximize their potential, independence and enjoyment of life.

The annual game was inspired by two local sports enthusiasts, Bob Carpenter and Jim Williams, who wanted to host a sporting event that spread awareness about cognitive disabilities. The first game was played in 1956.

In 1974, the Hand-in-Hand Program was formed as an off-shoot of the game. In this program, high school seniors are offered the opportunity to be paired with a child or young adult who is cognitively challenged, providing opportunities to learn more about each other and create relationships that are rewarding for everyone involved.

Keeping true to Carpenter and Williams' dream the annual football game still provides opportunities to promote understanding of people with cognitive disabilities. With the help of volunteers, community participants, individual contributors and corporate sponsors, DFRC raises thousands of dollars to support programs that encourage individuals with cognitive disabilities to develop and participate in the community. Funds are distributed to programs throughout Delaware.

Tickets for the game are $8 for general seating and can be purchased at any Delaware Happy Harry's location, B&B Tickettown, from any member of a Delaware Lions Club, at the Edward Jones office in Milford, or by calling the DFRC office at (302) 454-2730.
