First 'course' for new students is DelaWorld 101

9:24 a.m., June 21, 2007--DelaWorld 101 is the first important “course” for admitted freshmen and transfer students as they begin their college careers at UD. Scheduled weekdays this summer from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., June 19-July 19, DelaWorld officially welcomes new students to UD and provides a one-day orientation for them and their parents. (Click on “The Faces of DelaWorld 2007” graphic at the top of this page and on other UDaily article pages to see photos of some of the participants.)

Besides giving new students a preview of their lives in the fall, DelaWorld allows them to register for classes, meet with an academic adviser, obtain their UD identification card, sign up for online bill payment and become familiar with student organizations, housing, campus life, technology and activities.

There's an information fair with free ice cream where representatives from athletics, music, religious organizations, student media and others can answer questions about programs and opportunities available.

Students also can sit in on special information sessions about campus diversity and services for students with disabilities.

For parents, there are sessions on academic and student life, get-togethers with the parents of other new and current students and information about financial aid, billing, housing, student health, computing, banking and meal plans.

The UD admissions office is expecting 3,800 students and 9,000 parents and family members this year.

“This is the largest group attending DelaWorld since I became involved with it in 1989,” Faye Duffy, senior associate director of admissions and director of DelaWorld, said. "There are 3,800 new students and 9,000 parents. We are working with a staff of 100, and there are 16 DelaWorld leaders on the student staff."
