Newark Police investigate carjacking

8:39 a.m., June 1, 2007--Newark Police are investigating a carjacking that occurred around 1 p.m., Thursday, May 31, on New London Road (Route 896), north of Newark.

A 54-year-old man reported that he was driving his work vehicle, a 1969 light blue GMC truck with a water tank on the back, southbound on New London Road, when he stopped to pick up a hitchhiker somewhere near the Pennsylvania/Delaware state line. The man eventually ordered the hitchhiker out of his truck, but he refused. The hitchhiker then pushed the driver out of the vehicle and drove over his right leg.

The vehicle was subsequently located approximately 1/4 mile away, abandoned in the Fairfield Shopping Center. The driver was taken by helicopter to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted with a fractured right leg.

The suspect is described as 25-35 years old, 6 feet all, weighing 230 pounds, with short, crewcut hair. He was wearing shorts and either a tank top shirt or no shirt.
