Newark, UD partners in new summer bus service
9:42 a.m., June 13, 2007--The City of Newark and the University of Delaware have announced a new summer transportation partnership, with the Unicity bus service adding a route to serve the greater Newark community and the campus.

In the past, UD has suspended its bus service during the summer months since there are fewer students on the campus. Recently, some students have expressed interest in such service.

“The Graduate Student Senate expressed a need for summer bus service, so this is an opportunity to meet that demand and also to assess the demand in the wider community for evening and weekend hours of service,” Margot Hsu Carroll, assistant to the executive vice president at UD, said.

Newark has agreed to make its Unicity buses available for use on the new route, and the free service will be available both to members of the University community and the general public.

"The city is very excited about the opportunity to test the waters for evening and weekend service this summer," Roy Lopata, director of planning for the city, said.

The Unicity buses are smaller than the UD buses that normally run campus routes and are more economical to operate.

The new Unicity "N-Summer" service will begin June 18 and will operate from 7-10 p.m. during the week and from 7-10 a.m. and 7-10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Service will not be available on July 4.
