Fightin’ Blue Hens led NCAA in slugging stats

3:27 p.m., July 26, 2006--The University of Delaware baseball team finished the 2006 season leading NCAA Division I in home runs per game, doubles per game and slugging percentage, according to final statistics posted recently.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who set a school record with 111 home runs this season, led the country with 2.06 homers per game, well ahead of fellow Colonial Athletic Association member James Madison University, which was second with 1.71 home runs per game. UD also led the nation with 2.65 doubles per game and a .574 slugging percentage.

Additionally, the Hens ranked eighth in NCAA Division I with 8.6 runs per game, 22nd with 0.39 triples per game and 54th with a .310 batting average.

Sophomore Brandon Menchaca, named third team All-American by both the American Baseball Coaches Association and the publication Collegiate Baseball, was ranked fifth in the country with a .786 slugging percentage. Menchaca was also sixth with 0.17 triples per game, tied for 27th with 0.3 home runs per game, 32nd with a .395 batting average, 34th with both 1.19 runs batted in per game and 0.52 stolen bases per game, 39th with 1.13 runs scored per game, and 44th with 0.37 doubles per game.

Alex Buchholz, named first team All-Freshman by Baseball America and a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, was ranked 14th in the country with a .721 slugging percentage and 15th with 0.34 home runs per game. He also was 24th with 1.17 runs scored per game, 25th with 1.21 RBI per game, and 76th with a .378 batting average.

Senior Todd Davison was ranked fifth in the nation with 0.46 doubles per game and 14th with 1.22 runs scored per game, while junior Bryan Hagerich was tied for 27th with 0.3 home runs per game. Evan Bowen was 106th in the country with a 2.95 earned run average.

UD finished the season with a record of 30-24 while posting a mark of 12-18 in CAA play.
