Wellness screenings yield numbers to live by

2:12 p.m., July 31, 2006--UD's Employee Wellness Center is offering three commonly recommended health screenings from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, in 125 Memorial Hall for employees who want to check their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar levels.

The 10-minute procedure requires only a finger-stick sample of blood, with no beforehand fasting required. Appointments must be prescheduled, however, and participants should not eat within one hour of their appointment. Results, which will yield numbers indicating potential risks for heart disease and diabetes, will be provided and reviewed during the screening.

According to Marianne Carter, director of UD's Employee Wellness Center, "When a person has high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood sugar, there are often no symptoms. At these screenings, we frequently identify employees who previously did not know there was a problem.” Individuals whose test results indicate health risks will be referred to their physicians for further testing and treatment, Carter said.

The cost of the multiscreening is 15 Wellness Dollars, plus a $5 copay. On July 1 each year, employees receive 50 Wellness Dollars to use on their choice of programming.

To schedule an appointment, call (302) 831-8388. For more information, visit [www.udel.edu/wellness].
