Master Players concert series resumes

The ensemble China Magpie will join UD faculty violinist Xiang Gao (right) for a concert on May 18.

3:49 p.m., July 26, 2006--The University's Master Players Chamber Series' 2006-07 season will bring a pair of exciting concerts to campus this fall and continue with additional performances during spring semester.

Under the direction of its artistic director and internationally acclaimed faculty violinist Xiang Gao, the series' concerts have become sold-out events on the UD campus. They will continue to be held in Mitchell Hall on Friday evenings. Tickets may be purchased in advance and generally are not sold at the door. A brochure for the series, including more details about the concerts and ticket information, will be available in late August.

The season opens Oct. 6 with “A Path From Beethoven to Martinu,” featuring violinist Paul Kantor, a faculty member of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Aspen Music Festival and School; concert violist Jeanne Mallow; Kate Ransom, first violinist of the Serafin Quartet; and UD faculty members Lawrence Stomberg, cello, and Marianne Gythfeldt, clarinet.

A Dec. 1 concert, “An Encounter With Brahms,” features the romantic master's fiery piano quartet and other masterpieces, performed by acclaimed cellist Peter Wiley of the Guarneri String Quartet; concert pianist Orli Shaham; concert violist Victoria Chiang, a member of the Aspen Ensemble and the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory; UD faculty hornist John Smith; and concert series artistic director Gao on violin.

The Master Players series will continue Feb. 23 with “Live From Lincoln Center,” a recital by Grammy Award-winning cellist David Finckel and his wife, internationally known pianist Wu Han, who are artistic directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
