Bookstore gives lucky families ’Extreme Makeover’

Roxanne Vernacchio says she and her twin sons Steven and Eric purchased UD shirts, shorts, pants, towels, lanyards, a throw and a lot more with the $350 UD Bookstore gift certificate they won at DelaWorld on June 22.

11:20 a.m., July 14, 2006--UD now has it's own Extreme Makeover--Extreme Delaware Family Makeover, courtesy of the University Bookstore.

Each day of DelaWorld, June 20-July 19, one new UD family is awarded a $350 gift certificate for UD-licensed merchandise at the Bookstore. Bookstore manager Jennifer Galt snaps a “before photo” of each winning family. DelaWorld officially welcomes new students to UD and provides a one-day orientation for them and their parents.

After the DelaWorld proceedings conclude each day, the selected family goes to the Bookstore to use its gift certificate to outfit family members with UD T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, hats, visors, coffee mugs, etc. Galt said most families choose summer items they can wear immediately.

Before they leave, Bookstore employees ask families to e-mail an “after photo” of their UD makeover. Makeover photos will be posted online and UDaily readers will be able to vote for their favorites from Aug. 1-15. The family with the most votes will win all the textbooks needed for their student's fall classes.

“We would love to see their new look, so we're offering the textbooks in hopes that they will send us their pictures,” Galt said. “It's great fun because the families are so excited and it's really great to give back.”
