Student assistants honored by UD Library 10:42 a.m., July 20, 2006--The University of Delaware Library has presented special awards to two students for their work in the library. Senior Maria Trigo received the 2006 Library Student Assistant Service Award for having worked more than 2,200 hours at the library. Julie Libertore received the 2006 UDLAPS (University of Delaware Library Assembly of Professional Staff) Library Student Assistant Scholarship for outstanding student service, commitment to librarianship and leadership potential. The $750 scholarship will assist Libertore in her graduate library education at University of Michigan. The UD Library honored 34 graduating library student assistant employees at its annual Library Student Assistant Appreciation Reception in May. The graduating students were recognized for their years of library service, as well as their academic achievements. The reception provided an opportunity for Library staff to thank the student assistants who perform essential “front-line” services such as checking-out library and reserve materials; shelving new and returned books, journals and newspapers; searching bibliographic information on DELCAT; checking-in new journals, newspapers and other periodicals; processing interlibrary loan requests; and many other information duties. The highlight of the reception was a display of books selected by the graduating library student assistants in which special bookplates with their name and year of graduation were inserted. The selected titles reflect the personal and academic interests of the alumni, as well as current events. Some of the books selected by members of the Class of 2006 included: Kindred Hands: Letters on Writing by British and American Women Authors 1865-1935 edited by Jennifer Cognard-Black and Elizabeth MacLeod Walls; The Black Stars Who Made Baseball Whole: The Jackie Robinson Generation in the Major Leagues, 1947-1959 by Rick Swain; and Nature Revealed: Selected Writings, 1949-2006 by Edward O. Wilson. Photo by Jon Cox |
