Walkers needed for Sept. 10 Heart Walk

Last year, UD’s Heart Walk team captains, 142 walkers and employees raised $14,831.

4:52 p.m., July 12, 2006--Heart disease is this country's leading cause of death and disability, so, each year, UD participates in the American Heart Association's Delaware Heart Walk to raise money for education and research. This year, the walk will be held Sunday morning, Sept. 10, on a 3.1-mile course along the Riverfront in Wilmington.

Beverly Jackson, American Heart Association staff member, said the association is grateful for UD's level of involvement. "We greatly appreciate UD's participation. The large UD turnout at the event, and the presence of YoUDee, Baby Blue and the cheerleaders really highlight the University's support,” Jackson said.

Last year, the University's team captains, 142 walkers and employees raised $14,831, surpassing the $14,600 raised in 2004 and coming in just behind Christiana Care, AstraZeneca and St. Francis Hospital.

This year's walk is just around the corner, and all UD staff, faculty, students, alumni, retirees and friends are invited to participate in the annual fund-raiser. UD participants will receive YoUDee Heart Walk T-shirts and bus transportation from campus to the walk and back.

Each walker raises funds by soliciting donations from friends and family. Funds raised are used for local education and research in the fight against heart disease. Recent advances, such as automated external defibrillators, high-tech surgical techniques, clot-busting drugs and CPR training were aided by research supported by the American Heart Association.

"It's always exciting to see so many UD community members lend their support to this important cause,” Richie Holland, human resources manager and co-coordinator of UD's Heart Walk effort said. “Our goal is to exceed last year's participation and amount of money raised."

The following employees have volunteered to serve as Heart Walk captains. Their role is to recruit UD team members and distribute materials. Employees can join the team of any captain, no matter where they work on campus. Click here to join a team or create a new team, or contact any of the Heart Walk captains listed below:

"Over the past several years, the University has come out on top with respect to fund-raising,” Marianne Carter, director of UD's Employee Wellness Center and UD Heart Walk co-coordinator, said. “We're hoping for another record-breaking year, and we encourage the UD community to join us on Sept. 10 and lend its financial support to this worthwhile cause."
