Brown to lead Delaware cheerleading program

11:34 a.m., July 28, 2006--Andy Brown, who has worked with the Universal Cheerleading Association for the last six years, has been appointed University of Delaware head cheerleading coach and fitness coordinator.

Brown replaces Joe Mackley, who had led the award-winning Fightin' Blue Hens cheerleading squad since 1999 before stepping down to accept a position in private business earlier this year.

Brown, 25, is a 2004 graduate of Slippery Rock (Pa.) University with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. While at Slippery Rock, he was on the cheerleading squad and won a national partner stunt championship. During his time with the Universal Cheerleading Association, Brown worked closely with many of the top programs in the country, including UD.

After graduating from Slippery Rock, Brown worked as a health and physical education teacher at Butler (Pa.) Area High School before enrolling in graduate school at the University of Hawaii in pursuit of a master's degree in kinesiology. He will continue working toward a master's degree at UD.

Brown was a competitive power lifter throughout high school and college. He captured the 1999 Amateur Athletics Union world championship and set several national records.
