Buchholz, Menchaca earn national honors

10:11 a.m., July 10, 2006--University of Delaware baseball stars Alex Buchholz and Brandon Menchaca have earned several postseason honors, with Buchholz being named to Baseball America's All-Freshman team and Menchaca being named third team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Both players were named to the ABCA's All-East team.

Buchholz, an infielder and pitcher who had an outstanding first season for the Fightin' Blue Hens, was named first team All-Freshman for NCAA Division I by the popular baseball magazine. In 2006, he hit .378 with 18 home runs and 64 runs batted in and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year.

Menchaca, a sophomore outfielder, hit .395 and had 16 home runs and 64 runs batted in. He was selected first team All-CAA and is the first UD baseball player to be named an All-American since infielder Andrew Salvo was honored in 2001.
