Women in Agriculture conference set Jan. 19 10:29 a.m., Jan. 11, 2007--“Women play a critical role in day-to-day farm and agribusiness activities,” according to Laurie Wolinski, a University of Delaware Cooperative Extension associate. “Cooperative Extension recognizes the contributions of women in production agriculture and wants to help them succeed even further.” To that end, University of Delaware Cooperative Extension is sponsoring “Women in Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities,” a daylong conference to be held Friday, Jan. 19, at the Dover Sheraton in Dover. Featured speakers will be Mark Manno, statewide 4-H educator for UD Cooperative Extension, and Sara Busker, an agriculture education student at UD. Manno will speak on “Researching Your Family History,” and will discuss such genealogical treasures as the National Archives, the Delaware State Archives and the Historical Society of Delaware, as well as important online resources. Busker will relate her experiences growing up on her family's farm, dubbed “Jenamy Holsteins,” and will share her thoughts on what the future holds for young people who enter the field of agriculture In addition, morning and afternoon workshops will be presented on such topics as value-added agriculture, grain marketing, transitioning to organic production, farmer-grant opportunities and cut flower production. The event is modeled after a successful Nebraska conference, which has been held annually for more than 20 years, Wolinkski said. “The conference is a great opportunity for 'ag women' to get up-to-date, relevant information for their business and personal lives. It's a day of learning, visiting with friends and meeting new people who will share their stories and experiences.” Conference cost is $25, and lunch is included. Reservations are required. For information, call Wolinski at (302) 831-2538. Cooperative Extension programs are open to anyone regardless of race, color, sex, disability, age, or national origin. |
